Musings about personal and planetary healing from an herbalist, poet, and witch.
Thank you so much for this amazing sharing of knowledge, on all the levels, as you always do.
Figures that as I dive into the internet in search of the magic of Ghost Pipe I stumble across your teachings! I didn't realize this was your blog until I got to your story with it and I'm thinking... "Hey! This is Sean's story!" And low and behold it's you... I guess the internet is a small place for people in search of what I'm looking for...
It's a delight to follow the way you weave webs of understanding which allows me to really see something of this wonderful plant
So, how many grams of aerial plant ppart to ml of vodka?
Anonymous, cut the plant into smaller pieces so more surface area is exposed. Stuff a wide mouth jar with the plant pieces and fill with vodka until the plants are fully submerged. If gluten is an issue you can find gluten free vodkas at barnivore.com. If organic and GMO's are a concern: http://www.greenmuze.com/nurture/organic/634-organic-vodka-guide.html
I'm New to tincturing and had come across some ghost plant in my woods. A lot actually, but I made a tincture and everything I read says it's supposed to be a purplish color. Mine is the blackest thing you will ever see. Has been since after the first day. It's this normal? Did I do something wrong? I cut the whole plant up and added enough vodka to cover. I sealed it and put it in the cupboard only taking it out to shake it. Once in the morning, once at night.
Wow! Thank you for your insight. It's interesting to me that my first encounter with ghost pipe a couple days ago was alongside my son while we were involved in a search for a missing toddler deep in the woods. Both my son and I tend to have a bit of anxiety. Of course we didnt eat any, having a super time sensitive agenda. But for the ghost pipe to show itself to us at that moment of panic..
can any one send me more information on ghost pipe with pictures of the roots please i have alot of it growing in my woods. email@example.com
I read your blog. Its simply superb. useful for Column Pipe Manufacturers Thanks for sharingCPVC Pipes & Fittings Manufacturers
Fascinating Sean. I haven't worked with this powerful and otherworldly plant in my practice but your words inspire me. Life/death, initiation, poisoning, trauma, the in between realm. One of the main plants I work with for deep trauma and explring the underworld is Devil's Club. But that is big, deep rich murky thorny grandmother energy to me. I. pipe seems much more like a dweller on the edge, dancing between the worlds, maybe part trickster, playing into sensations of fear, trust, transcendence and hidden wisdom. Thanks much...
I have ghost pipe on my land and have got to know it well, the first time i sat with them I saw the tunnels between worlds. it was nice to read of your experience with this also. I tend to find the "parasitic" plants or carnivore plants to be distinctly otherworldly (darlingtonia) and feel very much they have their own stars and are happy visitors helping us on our way. my use with ghost pipe for addiction as well as emotional abuse is that it really helps reinforce and center the ego, which most people who have "spiraled out of control" or who are essentially hiding have lost sight of.... and when i look at ghost pipe's community they are all so similar but also distinctly individual with their heads pointing this way and that

Today, I went on a meditative hike through a local forest of beech, maple, and fir, and I came across this amazing plant. I instantly knew that it was special, and that I should learn more about its lore and uses, both spiritual and physiologic. Google led me to this page. As I read, I was amazed to discover that this plant treats almost every ailment that plagues me, panic in particular. I did not disturb the plant, but I think that meditating on its medicine will be beneficial for me. Thank you so much for writing this!
So I discovered several patches of Ghost Pipe on the property where I work; I was interested in cutting some for root-work purposes. Tincturing would be the easiest form of preservation for me ATM due to my living conditions, but I was wondering if anyone had tried drying it before using it? Also, what exactly could the tincture be used for? (I don't recall seeing that information anywhere in this post).
I just found it today growing in our forest and would like to try it, was not sure how you would use the tincture made with the vodka. Do you take it internally and what would be the amount> Thank you for your blog and all of the insight you have generously provided. Many thanks for any info
Thank you very muchly for your insight. I stumbled upon this lovely plant just today and had to figure out what it was. I was staying on land for the weekend, trying to set my mind to peace. (Long story) It presented itself at the perfect time.
What a captivating read. Thank you for so much good info. It's making a lot of more sense now.
Thanks for the amazing info on monotropa. It's not easy to find much on this herb. I was lucky enough to find the early season ghost pipe and late season pine sap monotropa. My question:Is it OK to harvest and use a few weeks after the plants have withered to black? Also I truly believe the root is not meant to be harvested. The few times I tried the root was so small it just didn't make sense to ruin the amazing symbiotic relationship. Also I believe this may only grow out of prehistoric native American burial grounds after finding the most beautiful patch about 20 feet from a cairn, so a prayer and possible offering is definetly in order when collecting in my opinion. Thanks again, Great work, Zac P.S. any knowledge of collecting after the stalks have withered would be Greatly appreciated. Peace through living places. Zac
Please, please, please please -----When talking about this plant, PLEASE DO NOT NEGLECT to talk about its RARE status. NOT everyone needs to be harvesting it. Please DO NOT just harvest it because you think it is cool. There are so many other more common plants that do very similar work as this plant, and it's truly only VERY RARELY indicated. Author of this post, PLEASE take more responsibility--if you are saying "ecosystem" in a post about this plant, I am going to publicly stand up and say "YOU need to be a more responsible herbalist" and talk about its rarity if you are going to talk about it in this kind of depth. I didn't even see a single caution. PLEASE think.Check this public fb post out for more reasons why. This is not my post, but I loved seeing it. Let's be responsible herbalists and ALWAYS mention the reality of overharvesting of rare plants when we are talking about this plant. https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fcorinne.boyer.564%2Fposts%2F1743643125849920&width=500" width="500" height="537" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowTransparency="true"

Its not that rare its rare to people who don't travel the woods . your a bit extreme . I've found it all over my travels growing in many different conditions. Just found a rather large bouque growing along a rotten log with absolutely no mushrooms visible .
Thank you for sharing this information. Something strange and wonderful happened today. I have been living with pain for over 13yrs. Long story short...I've stopped taking RX medications and started looking for natural pain relief. Last week I found a small patch of, what I now understand to be, ghost pipe on my property. After readying about the delicate nature of this flower I had decided to leave it undisturbed. Through the week I would check-in on the flowering GP. My Pain was tempting me more than usual yesterday and I found myself in tears, almost scolding the GP for being available, yet not in the way or amount that would be helpful. Well, today there are 7...yes 7 large patches of GP sprouting up all over my property! Truly thankful!!!
It really isn't that rare, it just doesn't grow everywhere. I know of one forest absolutely covered in it. I completely stuffed a huge jar without making so much as a dent in the population. I also have several colonies in my woods and know others who do as well. I find more Indian pipe than I find morrels, honestly. It's a sacred, special plant for sure, but not in real danger of being over-harvested.
